Here is an abbreviated schedule of important dates when we need help:Friday April 16th - afternoon/evening , would welcome help prepping for drywall to go upSaturday April 17th - morning until after lunch , dry-walling, and some moving of difficult items from old apartment to new house.Saturday April 24th - big moving day and possible painting or finish work if behind schedule
In addition to those dates, there are plenty of dates I'm listing below when help would be welcome, if possible.
Here is our tentative detailed schedule for the month of April :Monday April 12th - Our settlement day, no help needed but we will be starting demo in the kitchen. Taking out the ceiling tiles, cabinets, ripping off the wall panelingTuesday April 13th - Doing demo in kitchen all day, if anybody is available in the evening to help continue misc demo the help would be welcome, tho this is mutual night.Wednesday April 14th - I have work, so we'll do what we can by our selves for a few hours - no help neededThursday April 15th - I work again this night, so again no help neededFriday April 16th - complete any demo that hasn't been finished [I anticipate it should be done] do any prep work possible for dry walling. Run a few more electric outlets. I'm also going to pick up all the material for the job this day so everything is already preposition-ed. Any help in the afternoon/ evening would be great, and if things go real smoothly starting on some of the work would not be out of the question. Dinner will be provided to all who come out.Saturday April 17th - Dry-walling Party Day! This is stake conference weekend, so we're looking for as much help as possible for the morning till a little after lunch, so that it won't keep anybody from getting ready in time for the sessions I understand will be scheduled later in the afternoon / early evening. Priority one is to get the drywall hung, taped, and spackled. If we have enough help, we will also try to get some of the items from our apartment moved over that are too big or cumbersome for Amanda and I to handle our selves. The only three items that we *need* help with are my desk, our TV cabinet, and a dresser. We will rent an appliance dolly to help make this job easier. If we are able to, there are other items that can be brought over - but those are priority. I won't lie : they are all heavy, too. We will be providing a hearty lunch, and promise to replace any calories that are burned during all this work!Sunday April 18th - Day of rest! (kinda.... we all still need to do church stuff)Monday April 19th - I'm working overnight so again, Amanda and I will do a little our selves during the day, no additional help needed we plan on sanding and spackeling a bunch our selves.Tuesday April 20th - I'm working again, no help needed.Wednesday April 21st - If anybody is available we can use help finishing off the drywall in the evening, if it's not already completed.Thursday April 22nd - Same as above, if the drywall is finished we are going to be painting and then installing the new cabinets. Friday April 23rd - No help needed, We will be painting again.Saturday April 24th - This is our big moving day, and we could use help moving over anything that is left. Any final work needed to be done finishing the kitchen can be done this day. This is a catch-all day and if thing end up behind schedule we can do whatever is needed on this day - but if our friends and family come out anywhere close to the numbers of offers we've been getting this should be an easy day. We don't need to be out of our apartment until the end of the month (Friday April 30th) so if for some reason things fall drastically behind schedule we have almost a week of leeway on the end here. We'll contact the relief society about help cleaning out the old place, which shouldn't take long as it's only a one bedroom apartment.
Any days that people show up we will be providing meals and drinks, along with entertainment when I inevitably injure myself in creative and unpredictable ways during our big projects! I'm very open to feedback from anybody who has ideas on any of this, from suggestions improving efficiency to telling me when I'm in over my head (I have my own suspicions about that)....
To try to head off some questions here is a summary of what we are working with:-the house we're moving into started off almost "cottage sized" and then the square footage nearly doubled with the addition of a large living room / dining room off the back. The kitchen is the only big project that needs to be done, as it's *VERY* dated and flat out ugly. It is 14 feet by 10 feet. The ceiling is those stick-up, lock together tiles [not like in an office, they are around 1 foot squares]. The ceiling is going to be ripped out and dry-walled with added light fixtures including some recessed lighting, and a main ceiling fan / light. The cabinets are getting taken out and put down in the basement, where I'll asses the possibility of re-installing them for dry goods storage at a later date. The current walls in the kitchen are pressed particle board with a terrible ugly pattern in them. Typically this kind of wall board is only used in RV's and mobile homes, so it's coming out. We will replace the wallboard with real, honest to goodness drywall. The floor is laminate wood look-alike and will stay as it's in new condition. The old cabinets are being replaced with some gently used cabinets that we have been lucky enough to be getting from some friends of my parents who are re-doing their kitchen. Amazingly, they are virtually in the same configuration as our kitchen, and very close to the same dimensions, too! All the appliances coming with the house are already new, so we'll just move them out of the way during the construction, and replace when we've wrapped it up. The goal here is that we can accomplish this kitchen refresh before we officially move in, about 2 weeks later. We've got our apartment rented till the end of April anyways, in case of hiccups that push our schedule back. It's an ambitious project, but I think very do-able if we get near the turnout of awesome people who have offered their help.
